Walmart, Apple and Amazon might be on the hunt for experts in cryptocurrency products, according to recent job postings. For a technologists who specialize in blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies, the entry of giant retailers into this space could represent a sizable opportunity.

The Walmart posting, which has been removed, asked for a “Cryptocurrency and Digital Currency Product Lead” tasked with planning out a “digital currency strategy and product roadmap.” Over the summer, Amazon and Apple job postingsfor digital currency and blockchain experts also drew eyeballs. (Hat tip to The Verge for sourcing all those postings.)

If tech and retail giants move aggressively to hire cryptocurrency and blockchain experts, will they have an easy time finding viable candidates? According to a Stack Overflow survey of 700 software developers earlier this summer, 38.56 percent said that blockchain was “all hype,” while 61.44 percent said that it was a “game changer.” While 23.53 percent had worked with blockchain in the past, the rest hadn’t touched the technology in any kind of professional context

Meanwhile, an analysis via Burning Glass, which collects and analyzes millions of job postings from across the country, shows there were 18,940 postings that mentioned “blockchain” over the past 12 months. Burning Glass predicts that demand for blockchain-related jobs will grow 24.6 percent over the next 10 years.

While not every blockchain job will involve cryptocurrency, many certainly will. Companies large and small are examining the technology’s uses in everything from “smart contracting” to cybersecurity. For those interested in learning more, experts advise exploring online courses such as Udacity and Coursera, as well as specific sites such as Bitcoin.org. And if you’re really interested in cryptocurrency as a career, keep an eye on the jobs posted by the tech giants; it’s clear they’re interested in it, too.
