UMass Boston has opened an Entrepreneurship Center as part of the College of Management's MBA curriculum. Dan Phillips, the EC's founding director, puts front and center the program's mentor and advisory board, comprised of executives, venture capitalists, bankers and lawyers who focus on the Bay State's tech start-up environment, The board works with students on marketing, sales, finance, IT, software development and quality assurance. The Center works closely with the school's Venture Development Center, a start-up incubator offering students laboratory workspace in areas like technology and life sciences. "It's for students but also companies looking for a place to launch their business," says Phillips. So far, the school's placed 47 interns at Boston-based start-ups. The idea, says Phillips, is to get students into young businesses where executives are cost-conscious and looking for talented, entry-level workers. -- Sonia R. Lelii
