If you want to find a job in A.I. and machine learning, you may have to focus your job-hunting attentions on the largest companies, particularly those in tech, consulting, and automobiles.

According to a Dice.com analysis of job postings, companies such as Ford, Google, and Meta are on a continual hunt for A.I. and machine learning talent. Check out the chart:

The biggest companies have the budget to afford ultra-expensive A.I. talent. O’Reilly estimates the average salary of data and A.I. professionals at $146,000 per year (that’s from 2,778 respondents in the U.S. and 284 in the U.K.); salaries increased an average of 2.25 percent annually. Of course, those with extensive experience and skills in A.I. and machine learning can see their compensation climb still higher, especially at the tech giants where senior-level positions come with significant equity payouts. For example, a recent Netflix posting for a machine learning product manager job listed the salary range at $300,000 to $900,000.

If you want to become a machine learning and A.I. engineer, you’ll need to learn a core set of programming languages, frameworks, and abstract concepts. These frameworks and tools will also evolve in coming years, so anyone interested in A.I. will need to keep their knowledge continually up-to-date. For example, those who become machine learning engineers need to master:

  • Researching, designing and implementing ML models and systems
  • Implementing machine learning algorithms and tools
  • Scaling data science prototypes
  • Selecting appropriate data sets, verifying data quality, cleaning and organizing data (in collaboration with data engineers)
  • Performing statistical analysis
  • Executing tests and optimizing machine learning models and algorithms
  • Monitoring systems in production and retraining them to improve performance
  • Utilizing machine learning libraries

Even if you don’t want to become an A.I. specialist, keep in mind that a plethora of tech roles will soon adopt A.I. tools (if they haven’t already). The more you know about A.I., the better for your career.
