Which employers hired the most technologists in 2021? As you might suspect, technology companies were some of the biggest hirers of technologists—but finance, insurance, and consulting firms were also intensely hungry for tech talent.

That breakdown comes via Emsi Burning Glass, which collects and analyzes millions of job postings from across the country. Based on 12 months’ worth of data, Deloitte tops the list as the top hirer of tech talent, followed by Anthem Blue Cross, Amazon, Accenture, and Humana. Check out the full chart:

What makes Deloitte such a tech-hiring powerhouse? Throughout 2021 (and the pandemic as a whole), consulting firms have been on a technologist hiring spree, driven by the need to provide clients from all kinds of industries with the consultants and contractors necessary to build and maintain extensive technology projects.

Consultants and contractors provide the short-term muscle necessary to scale up teams and get products to market faster. But as any manager will tell you, relying on contractors can also come with significant drawbacks, most notably the loss of any institutional knowledge once those contractors leave to go on their next assignment.

Beyond the consulting and contracting giants, Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, Dell, Facebook, and other tech companies engaged in a spate of full-time hiring over the past year. Many of these companies are rapidly expanding their cloud-based services and apps, which requires the talents of technologists skilled in everything from cloud architecture to mobile app development.

Despite the hunger for talent (and the notably low tech-industry unemployment rates), companies won’t hire just anyone—when developing your application materials, it’s key to present your experience and skills in the best possible light, and to tailor your cover letter and résumé to match the specifics of the position you’re applying for. At the same time, the demand means that technologists with the right experience and skills can negotiate for higher salaries and all kinds of benefits, including flexible schedules and unlimited PTO.
