As we head into the end of 2019, which tech skills are in greatest demand among employers? And which employers are hiring the most technologists?

We used Burning Glass, which collects and analyzes millions of job postings from across the U.S., to answer both of these questions. And over the past thirty days, it’s clear that employers most want technologists who can wrestle with SQL, no doubt in order to build and maintain databases.

Among programming languages, Java and JavaScript appeared frequently in job postings. Python, which is often cited as an up-and-coming programming language in many sub-industries, including finance and data science, also placed on the list:

Which employers have been advertising their need for technologists over the past month? Perhaps unsurprisingly, dominating this particular list are technology firms (IBM, Amazon), defense companies (Raytheon), and finance firms and banks (Bank of America). The U.S. government is also hiring:

As for job titles, it’s clear from our Burning Glass analysis that data still rules: the top trending job titles (as measured year-over-year) include mathematician, data engineer, computer scientist, and security management specialist. Employers clearly want workers who can sort through, analyze, and draw valuable insights from massive amounts of data.

“Mathematician” has held the top slot on this list for the past several months, and such jobs usually involve not only solid analytical skills, but also a lot of experience with programming languages such as Python, R, and others used in data analytics. Facility with these languages will inevitably come up during job interviews for data scientist and data analyst positions.

Based on this data, if you’re looking for a new job in the New Year, we can recommend that you focus on data-related skills; there’s clearly a widespread hunger among employers for technologists who can crunch data with the best of them.
