Google is famous for launching a handful of jokes every April Fools’ Day, but one of this year’s efforts may have gone a little too far. “Gmail Mic Drop” was built on a simple premise: Gmail users could send a message that included an animated GIF of a Minion dropping a microphone. Even better, the sender wouldn’t see any replies from the recipient(s). “Email's great, but sometimes you just wanna hit the eject button,” read Google’s tongue-in-cheek blog posting on the matter. “Like those heated threads at work, when everyone's wrong except you (obviously). Or those times when someone's seeking group approval, but your opinion is the only one that matters (amirite?).” The fun lasted but a few hours, though, before Google decided to call it off. “Due to a bug, the Mic Drop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs,” read an update on the blog. “We’re truly sorry.” So why did the prank backfire? It’s impossible to tell for sure, but the proximity of the “Mic Drop” button to the conventional “Send” may have resulted in too many people accidentally blowing up serious conversations. Imagine your boss emailing you about an overdue report, only to receive a Minion. He or she probably wouldn’t think that was funny, even if it is April Fools’ Day.
