Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, who took the top post at the chip-maker in 2013, sat down recently with Oregon Live for a wide-ranging interview about his management philosophy and plans for the company. As part of that discussion, he offered some advice for those working their way up the ladder, including what he sees as the three big mistakes people make in their careers: First, they neglect to create a five-year plan. “You have to know: Where do you want to be?” he said. “What do you want to accomplish? Who do you want to be in five years?” Second, they keep quiet about their dreams, hopes and aspirations. Krzanich thinks everybody should share those things with bosses, mentors, and anyone else who can help with resources or advice. Third, they don’t seek out mentorship. “You have to have someone who's watching out,” he added, “helping you navigate the decision-making processes, how things get done, how you're perceived from a third-party view.” Krzanich also commented on Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s recent gaffe, during which the latter recommended that women not ask for raises, by suggesting that everybody—male and female alike—should communicate their needs to management. “When you want a raise you're not only going in saying: I want more money,” he said. “You're going in and saying: Here's what I want out of my career. Here's what I accomplished. Here's what I said I was going to do. Here's what I've done. Not only do I deserve more money but I want to get to here on my career.” There’s much more at Oregon Live.
