What do Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Dick Costolo have in common, besides running massive tech companies? All three participated in the #icebucketchallenge, an attempt to raise awareness of ALS, also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Just in case you haven’t logged into Twitter or Facebook over the past few days and seen dozens of people participating in the challenge, here’s how it works: you announce that you’re supporting the need for more awareness, dump a bucket of ice water over your head, and challenge three friends to do the same. It helps if you do all that on camera, just so nobody doubts that you actually took an icy bath. Anyway, here’s Zuckerberg:
Here’s Nadella: Yes, it’s Apple CEO Tim Cook: And Dick Costolo: Raising awareness of ALS is certainly a good thing, but a cure isn’t found by awareness alone. While the #icebucketchallenge suggests people dunk themselves with ice water in lieu of contributing money to ALS research, the campaign will hopefully prompt more people (including some tech titans) to contribute cash.
