“Amazon Vancouver anticipates growing quickly,” says a notice on its site. Another states, “The Amazon Vancouver development team will initially focus on helping to develop tools and applications that enable all Amazon engineers to deliver the best, most scalable and efficient technologies.”
So far, there are about 70 positions listed for software engineers, and a half-dozen for technical project managers and other high-skill positions.
The company has committed to leasing up to 156,000 square-feet of office space – enough for 1,000 workers — in a new development in downtown Vancouver. It’s to take possession of the space in 2015. Amazon opened its initial engineering center in Vancouver earlier this year.
Electronic Arts has about 1,300 employees in Vancouver, and Microsoft has 450. A double line of hopefuls stretched two city blocks into a HootSuite meet-and-greet earlier this month, where it had advertised 100 open positions.
Meanwhile, in Seattle, the city’s Design Review Board has given the thumbs up to Amazon’s plans for a massive, three-part biodome after its architects convinced the panel that the structure would look really cool to passers-by. The city’s planning commission must now OK the plans.
The goal of the 3.3 million-square-foot office and retail complex, complete with mature trees, is to create an environment where employees can “work and socialize in a more natural, park-like setting,” according to the company.
At last count, the company employed 97,000 workers – its headcount has tripled in the past three years – and it plans to add 70,000 warehouse workers for the holiday season.
