Supermarket chain Food Lion’s parent company, Delhaize America, is outsourcing its data center operations to IBM, according to the Salisbury Post. A spokesperson for the company said that a total of 58 Delhaize employees will be affected — half in its Salisbury, North Carolina, headquarters and half in Scarborough, Maine. An internal memo said Delhaize is also considering outsourcing its network services, help desk, and desktop support functions by the end of 2013, but the company has not yet finalized plans. A total of 80 workers are expected to be impacted. The laid off employees can apply for permanent jobs with IBM or take severance. All of them will be offered employment with IBM for at least six months. Said Spokeswoman Christy Phillips-Brown: “Delhaize America has made the decision to outsource a small number of functions within the information technology department. We believe outsourcing these functions to trusted partners will enable us to utilize the technology industry’s best providers of these services and further deliver innovation for our customers and associates.” Delhaize has seen a major shakeup in its C-suite of late. Stéfan Descheemaeker, the CEO of Delhaize Europe, recently stepped down from the top spot. Roland Smith, CEO of Delhaize America, left the company after Frans Muller was tapped for Delhaize Group CEO. Reports say Smith was gunning for the spot.
