Quebec is fast becoming a hub of gaming, courtesy of continued provincial funding in the sector. According to CTV Montreal, the Quebec government is investing $1.5 million to expand the studios at Warner Brothers Games Montreal. The grant goes toward a five-year, $63 million project that is expected to create 100 jobs, the television channel said. Quebec FlagCurrently, the studio has 325 permanent employees. The new jobs will reportedly pay about $70,000 a year. Warner Brothers Games is expecting even larger growth down the road, projecting an employee base of 500 at the location by 2018. The company is a subsidiary of the American company Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The Montreal studio chief, Martin Carrier, said, “This Warner Brothers studio here in Montreal only opened three years ago but it is growing rapidly. In five years’ time the executives here expect that this studio will be on a par with every other Warner Brothers studio.” In announcing the funding, Premier Pauline Marois called Montreal’s video game industry the top market in Canada and one of the most important in the world. Another big gaming company is increasing headcount in Quebec, as well: Ubisoft plans to invest $373 million into its operations there over the next seven years, expecting to generate an additional 500 jobs. That would bring its Quebec workforce to a total of 3,500 by 2020.
