HIRING
Fueled by growth of its open hybrid cloud solutions,
Red Hat continues to
expand in North Carolina and Massachusetts. It is seeking IT professionals in software engineering and technical support. [Dice News]
Seagate may be poised to
hire an additional 100 people, despite a steep drop in fiscal fourth quarter revenues and net income, according to published reports. The company, however, noted that it was too early to predict the number of new hires and the types of positions they might fill. [Dice News]
Mars One is looking for a team to colonize the Red Planet. Although it’s seeking only two men and two women, more than 100,000 people have applied to make the one-way trip. [Dice News]
LAYOFFS
IBM laid off 203 workers in San Jose, according to documents the company filed with the State of California. The cuts were part of its
$1 billion restructuring plan that has already resulted in over 3,000 job cuts. The move comes as Big Blue gears up to initiate a
one-week forced furlough on many of the U.S. workers affiliated with its hardware operations. [Dice News]
Symantec is
preparing to cut 180 people from its Mountain View and Culver City, Calif., offices. The layoffs are part of a restructuring plan announced earlier this year, and represent only a fraction of the reported 1,700 layoffs the security software company is planning to make. [Dice News]
Micron is reportedly preparing to cut 1,500 workers from its global operation of approximately 30,000 people over the next 17 months. The company says the reduction will be made through attrition, voluntary buyouts and layoffs, which are slated to wrap up by 2014. [Idaho Statesman.com] The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints cut 13 IT workers from its payroll in Utah, adding to the layoffs of 5 to 8 percent it initiated earlier this year in its publishing and information communication systems departments. [The Salt Lake Tribune]
AOL will cut between 250 to 500 people by closing local Patch sites that aren’t on target to break even in the near future. [Dice News]
