CoreSite Realty, a national data center provider, said Tuesday that it has added the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Direct Connect service to CoreSite’s New York data center. CoreSite customers can directly access AWS cloud services over a secure private-network connection, which the company said would reduce cost, increase throughput scalability and offer more consistent network performance. Customers can use AWS Direct Connect to establish one or more private logical connections between their on-premise network and their Amazon Virtual Private Cloud, all while maintaining network isolation. CoreSite customers can access AWS Direct Connect via a standard, single-mode fiber 1 Gbit/s or 10 Gbit/s Ethernet cross connection or Any2 internet exchange connection, ordered via the MyCoreSite online customer portal. Previously, CoreSite offered the AWS Direct Connect service in its Los Angeles data center, where it has been an option since 2011. Customers can also save costs, according to CoreSite, via transferring their data directly through the AWS Direct Connect portal, which Amazon manages, rather than via the Internet at large. This saves bandwidth costs, and establishes a consistent network throughput for low-latency applications like video. AWS Direct Connect lets customers establish a dedicated network connection between their own network and one of the AWS Direct Connect locations. The dedicated connection can be partitioned into multiple virtual interfaces using industry-standard 802.1q VLANs, according to Amazon. The same connection can access public resources such as objects stored in Amazon S3 using public IP address space, and private resources such as Amazon EC2 instances running within an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud. Amazon a flat rate $0.30 per hour for a 1-Gbit AWS DirectConnect connection, and $2.25 per hour for a 10-Gbit connection. Amazon doesn’t charge for data transfers into its facility from CoreSite, but $0.03 per gigabyte for data transferred back. The latter rate is a penny more per gigabyte than what Amazon charges for data transfers out of its facility to the Equinix DC1 - DC6 & DC10 data centers in Ashburn, Virginia. The CoreSite and Equinix facilities are the only public sites on the East Coast with an available AWS DirectConnect connection. CoreSite also owns data centers in several other locations, but without the AWS DirectConnect option. During the second quarter, CoreSite said it was in the process of completing a 50,000-square-foot data center in Santa Clara, Calif., and smaller 20,000-square-foot facility in Chicago.
