Hewlett-Packard's bleeding talent from Vertica, originally cast as one of the pillars of HP's Information Management business unit. Vertica's ability to analyze structured data was considered a perfect fit for Autonomy's skills with unstructured data. Among the execs leaving the unit are CTO Dan Holle, who went to Greenplum, a division of EMC; and Mingsheng Hong, formerly the unit's field CTO and now chief data scientist at Hadapt. CRN quotes an anonymous source saying:
"The problem for HP is that it does not have anything close to EMC/Greenplum and IBM Netezza. Without the folks to continue developing Vertica, that group could be in trouble."
However, all the original designers of Vertica's core technology are still with the company, a source told CRN. Autonomy's co-founder and CEO Mike Lynch was among the first to go in HP CEO Meg Whitman's recent restructuring. Lynch's departure also sent about 250 of the company's 2,000 employees packing. And the two units have different bosses. In March, Vertica was moved to the Software division under Bill Veghte, who has since been named COO. George Kadifa now heads Software.
