Acer unveiled the thinnest ultra book yet at the start of the Consumer Electronics Show. The Aspire S5 is just 15 mm at its thickest point (no information on thinnest point). The Taiwan-based company says the 13.3-inch ultrabook weighs less than 1.35 kg, the exact weight of Apple's MacBook Air. Late last year, Acer CEO J.T. Wang vowed to shift the company's focus from cheap and unprofitable products and to bet more heavily on ultrabooks — after the company posted net losses for two consecutive quarters. Exact specifications of the Aspire S5 are scarce at this point, but we know that the S5 will be powered by an Intel Core processor, solid-state drive, and a battery pack that will last three times as long as traditional batteries. Surprisingly, it'll also come with a Thunderbolt port, a port capable of transferring data at 20 Gbps that's found mostly on Apple computers. The Thunderbolt port is housed in the so called "MagicFlip I/O port panel," alongside more conventional ports like USB 3.0 and HDMI. The MagicFlip panel is concealed just below the hinge, and will make an appearance with only a button press. It's otherwise hidden to maintain the slimness of the ultrabook. The former, as its name suggest, wakes the ultrabook from sleep almost instantaneously, in less than 1.5 seconds. The latter allows users to wake up their ultrabooks remotely from an external device, providing always-available access to their files even when the ultrabook is in Sleep mode. Acer's Aspire S5 will be available in Q2 this year. Exact pricing is unknown at this point, but Techland was told that it could range from $1,000 to $1,300, depending on the computer's configuration.
