If you're an engineer, you're constantly under pressure to perform. Every moment you're under the gun to deliver a product. While others are dabbling and seeing the benefits of social media participation, you may not have had that opportunity. Engineers and developers have to use their time to focus on deliverables. At Silicon Valley Code Camp, Oliver Marks of the Sovos Group talked about how engineers can participate in the modern collaborative enterprise. Unlike the easy success of social networking, getting people to collaborate in an enterprise is a tougher proposition. Marks says that in order to move up in your organization, you need to communicate to other departments what you're doing and what pressures you're under as an individual and a team. It's all about documenting your work, often using wikis and blogs. By providing this kind of communication within your company, you can demonstrate your value to people outside of your immediate group.
