How do tech companies weed out superstars from average programmers? Apparently, by throwing them curve ball interview questions.
While logic puzzles, riddles and hypothetical questions have a long tradition in tech interviews, some of the latest have gone into the realm of the ridiculous. Sure, we can see how some may help a manager determine the quick thinking and analytical abilities of a candidate, but asking, “If the Star Trek transporter was for real, how would that affect the transportation industry?” is pretty close to the final frontier.
Glassdoor came up with the top 25 oddball interview questions of the past 15 months. Not surprising, many of them came from the tech world, where companies like Google pride themselves on asking strange questions.
Here’s a sampling:
“Explain quantum electrodynamics in two minutes, starting now.”
“How many smartphones are there in New York City?”
“You have a bouquet of flowers. All but two are roses, all but two are daisies, and all but two are tulips. How many flowers do you have?”
“Rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 how weird you are.”
