A wide range f skills are needed in Atlanta as the city works its way toward
recovery. On Dice, the city’s job listings were up 1.4 percent month to month
in October, with more than 2,000 jobs posted. Year to year, that’s up more than 55, the fourth best performance of all the metropolitan areas Dice tracks. And it compares well to the city’s overall unemployment of 10 percent. That’s a little worse than the national average of 9.6 percent. What sort of skills are most in demand? CMS developers, PHP developers, and Flash developers. Also, experts in data warehousing/ business intelligence, and security. Cloud computing has a ot of buzz. So VMware architects, server administrators, solutions architects and product managers are all needed.

In Silicon Valley, a lot of tech firms are doing quite well, thank you. If you’re job hunting there, that could be good news. Google’s boosted its local workforce by 20 percent, but it’s in real competition with the likes of Facebook and Twitter. In the last 12 months, Facebook has boosted its staff from 1,000 to about 1,700 and Twitter’s tripled its workforce. At the same time, PricewaterhouseCoopers plans to add 100 employees over the next year in San Jose. Many of those will be tech professionals – the firm’s staffing up to provide services to high tech clients throughout the Valley.

So, where do you go if you’re a company in need ofthe smart IT people? Seattle.
TechFlash says Silicon Valley heavyweights are going up there in search of talent they can’t find closer to home. Facebook, Salesforce.com and Hulu are all establishing engineering branches in the area. Which means higher wages and more opportunities for software developers and others with the right skills.
