The folks at the Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMi) at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia discovered something there wasn't an app for. So they made one. That something was browsing the human genome, and the app is Genome Wowser. It's described as being “kind of like Google Maps for the (human) genome – it lets users navigate the 3 billion base pairs of the human genome via their iPad." Scrolling your way through all of the base pairs is one thing, but that alone would not give the context that is necessary to make the app palatable for regular folks who are not geneticists. To do that, CBMi has made the genome searchable, added annotations by researchers and embedded information about epigenetics. Upcoming versions will include cats, dogs, chimpanzees and 11 species of fruit flies.
