[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzzFy4hpL7k&w=560&h=345] HP's introduced the world's first WiFi mouse, highlighting its independence from USB receivers like its Bluetooth counterparts and conventional (and cheaper) wireless mouses. It uses significantly less battery juice than its Bluetooth equivalents, boasting up to nine months of battery life. (No, that's not a typo.) The mouse connects itself to the PC by utilizing the PC's built-in WiFi receiver. It does not depend on a WiFi network, so it doesn't matter whether or not your router is running. The mouse works best on machines powered by Windows 7. The initial setup pairs it to the PC with a step-by-step wizard. It then automatically reconnects for subsequent use. Disregarding the technology behind the scenes, the only real advantage over comparable Bluetooth models is in its lower battery consumption. The Bluetooth mouse has freed PCs from USB dongles or receivers for a while now. So, in the end, HP Wi-Fi Mobile Mouse is a pretty regular mouse:
  • Up to nine months of battery life – more than twice the battery life of comparable Bluetooth® models.(2)
  • Five customizable buttons that allow users to create shortcuts for common actions such as cut, paste, undo and redo.
  • A smooth, four-way-tilt scroll wheel to improve control while scrolling up and down or side to side.
  • Full functionality up to 30 feet from the PC.
  • A sculpted form with rubber sides to ensure a comfortable, secure grip that can be used in the right or left hand.
It will be available in the U.S. for a modest $49.99 in June.
