Thousands of Silicon Valley area tech professionals work for distant companies, reports the San Jose Mercury News. For instance:

  • Silicon ValleyGermany-based SAP employs more than 3,500 in the region, mostly in Palo Alto.
  • Western Digital, an Irvine, Calif., based storage disk maker, employs 5,350 in Silicon Valley, including those at two manufacturing plants.
  • Dell, headquartered in Round Rock, Texas, employs more than 700 workers at its Silicon Valley Research and Development Center in Santa Clara.

These are just of few of the companies that have set up satellite operations in the Valley in order to tap into the region’s deep bench of talent among engineers, software developers, mobile experts and others.

As Tracey Grose, Vice President of the Bay Area Council Economic Institute, told the Mercury News: "It's fascinating how many companies from all over the world are seeking out an address here."
