Hiring

Walmart eCommerce is in the market to hire “several hundred” technologists by the end of the year in Silicon Valley. The additions come as the company plans to expand its e-commerce operations around the world and has seen tremendous growth from its online efforts. [Dice News]

Coursera, the online education site based in Mountain View, Calif., will hire approximately 25 to 26 engineers and other IT specialists by the end of the year. The move is part of plans to bump up its overall workforce from 50 to 100 people following its receipt of $43 million in venture funding. [Dice News] Big Data startup Ayasdi of Palo Alto, Calif., has received an investment of $30.6 million and plans to hire data scientists, user interface specialists, testers, software developers, project managers and engineers. Layoffs

JDS Uniphase, a network company, will cut 126 positions in Santa Rosa by Sept. 12, according to a WARN notice filed with the state. In the third quarter, JDS Uniphase faced lower than expected revenues for its Communications Test and Measurement and Optical Communications businesses as carriers delayed capital expenditures. [Dice News] Symantec is planning to cut 242 positions more positions between July 18 and Sept. 4 at two of its California locations. Some 194 positions will be eliminated at its Mountain View office in three rounds during the period, while its Culver City location will cut 48 people in two rounds. [Dice News] Medical device company Kinetic Concepts let go approximately 100 employees, or roughly 2 percent of its global workforce. Most of the cuts were in the U.S. and affected workers in IT as well as the sales and service departments. Half of the affected jobs are in San Antonio, Texas. [San Antonio Express] Hewlett-Packard plans to lay off 500 workers at its Conway, Ark., customer support operation. Although HP plans to keep the center open and continue to employ several hundred people there, the move is a far cry from its earlier plans to eventually employ as many as 1,200 workers at the site.
