Tactus Technology, in their secret laboratories, is using microfluidic technology to create a tactile surface that transforms into a psychical input keyboard, with real touch buttons, whenever the software requires keyboard input. When the typing operation is done, the buttons recede back into the touchscreen.
It’s a major leap forward and could be a feature that might kill the smartphones that are not touchscreen based.
A few years ago, when the smartphone revolution began, I remember saying to myself that it would be hard to handle a touchscreen device in certain situations. I’m saying this as the owner of a Nokia phone with buttons, which I could easily control even in my sleep.
I didn’t want to purchase a touchscreen based smartphone for several reasons: fragile construction, bad sunlight usage, low battery life and, of course, lack of psychical buttons.
Tactus Technology hopes its magical keyboard will reach tablets, smartphones, personal navigation systems, gaming devices and other electronics in 2013.
Our Tactile Layer technology easily integrates with today’s touchscreen-based devices (smart phones, tablets, personal navigation systems, gaming devices, etc.) by simply replacing the front layer of the display stack, known as the “lens,” “window” or “cover glass.” Our dynamic Tactile Layer component is the same thickness as the layer it replaces and requires no change to the underlying display or touch sensor.
