Google is looking to add a little humor to new top-level domains (TLDs) when they're eventually issued. That, in part, explains its .lol application prior to ICANN's deadline last week for new TLDs. According to ICANN, 1,900 applications for new TLDs were submitted by various companies and organizations and it expects to release a list of the applied-for domain names on June 13. Google says they registered 4 categories of new TLDs:
- Trademarks, like .google
- Domains related to their core business, like .docs
- Domains that will improve user experience, such as .youtube, which can increase the ease with which YouTube channels and genres can be identified
- Domains that have an interesting and creative potential, such as .lol
As Vint Cerf, Google's Chief Internet Evangelist, remarks in his blog post:
We’re just beginning to explore this potential source of innovation on the web, and we are curious to see how these proposed new TLDs will fare in the existing TLD environment. By opening up more choices for Internet domain names, we hope people will find options for more diverse—and perhaps shorter—signposts in cyberspace.
I also heard Radix applied for 31 interesting TLDs: .web, .shop, .bank, .law, .music, .news, .blog, .movie, .baby, .store, .doctor, .hotel, .play, .home, .site, .website, .click, .online, .one, .ping, .space, .world, .press, .chat, .city, .deals, .insurance, .loans, .app, .host, .hosting, but we'll have to wait 2 weeks to see if they'll make it through.
