Internet WorldDomain hunters, I've got some bad news: You've been doing it all wrong. Mike Mann, a guy that is literally living from buying and selling domain names, says that he recently purchased 14,962 domains in 24 hours. Is domain dealing any way to make a living? Tell us what you think in the comments below. Mann started doing domain deals when he founded Internet Interstate in 1994. He later sold it to Verio. On his personal website, he says that he also founded BuyDomains.com, which would become world’s largest secondary market for domain names after being sold to Highland Capital and Summit Partners in 2005 for $80 million. What's His Secret? Like everyone, Mann has his own secret. Sure, it's nearly impossible to register 14,962 domains in 24 hours, at least if you do it yourself. But he built a great software/human-powered system. At first, the software sorts out Google-friendly keywords by traffic potential and filters out any trademark violators. After that, it ranks the possible domain names to find things like CeoHealthClub.com, DrugDevelopers.com, ChineseFoodCatering.com, and BaptistChurchCamp.com. He then registers them.
We have a filter, but I'm the world's most efficient human filter for this sort of thing. I don't think anyone can read huge lists of domain names as quickly as I can and understand what they're reading. I'm a pattern reader. It's a huge pain in the ass, but it's what I do for a living.
Mann personally sorts the list of possible domain names and chooses the ones that he thinks are the most profitable. After that, the software completes the process by purchasing the domains Mann previously picked. Mann even patented the whole thing in 2001, and claims that his invention is used or has been copied by virtually every domain company. Last week's domain purchase adventure cost Mann nearly $100,000, but he's confident that the14,962 domains are worth more than that.
There's these idiots that are questioning this, claiming I don't know what I'm doing and throwing away my money. The issue is whether this batch worth is 100K. Any professional can tell you yes.
