Amazon's 905 billion objects stored at the end of 2012's first quarter. With Cloud Services, the company wants to introduce "the industry's first hybrid delivery approach and portfolio based on a common architecture spanning traditional IT, private, managed and public clouds." It might sound complicated, but it's not. HP's Cloud Services is basically a service like Amazon Web Services or VMware, with multiple features. HP mixes OpenStack technology with its Converged Infrastructure and HP Software. For those who don't know,
OpenStack is an open-source cloud platform developed by Rackspace Hosting and NASA, which "aims to deliver solutions for all types of clouds by being simple to implement, massively scalable, and feature rich". HP Cloud Services will
enter public beta on May 10 and start with a 50 percent discount. Its six services:
- HP Cloud Compute will allow users to customize and launch virtual servers within minutes.
- HP Cloud Object Storage will allow customers to store their files for archiving, backup and static serving.
- HP Cloud CDN is powered by Akamai Intelligent Platform and is the tool that delivers static data from HP Cloud Object Storage anywhere in the world within fast low-latency speeds.
- HP Cloud Block Storage stores data from HP Cloud Compute instances and is ideal for those who frequently read/write data (eg. web applications). This helps preserving data from a compute instance beyond the life of the instance.
- HP Cloud Relational Database for MySQL is a Web-based service that gives you access to your database in a fast, scalable, secure and reliable way.
- HP Cloud Identity Services manages user identities and give them access across all current and future HP Cloud Services under one set of credentials (using an authentication token).
HP Cloud Services is promising and will give Amazon and other providers something to think about. Microsoft, Amazon, VMware, Rackspace and soon Google will all compete in the Cloud. For HP it's a step forward, and maybe a reinvention.
