Android Plush BagGoogle is hosting the first ever Android Camp for university freshmen and sophomore BA/BS students this summer.  Android Camp is an all-expense-paid opportunity for high achievers to familiarize themselves with the Android platform and get a taste of the Google culture.  For seven days this summer, up to 30 students will have the opportunity explore Android fundamentals and get a glimpse into life at Google.
"The Android Camp will include interactive and collaborative curriculum focusing on a practical introduction to developing applications for Android and will explore the concepts behind Android, the framework for constructing an application, and the tools for developing, testing, and publishing software for the platform. Students will also get the opportunity to enjoy technical talks by Googlers, and social activities around the Bay Area."
The camp is currently available only to freshman and sophomore students in the U.S. and Canada. The application deadline is March 11, 2012, at midnight (EST).  Students applying must be enrolled in a four-year BA/BS degree program, be able to demonstrate academic excellence, and have at least one year of Java programming experience. Google is offering this program in an effort to foster development in Open Source software and to give high-acheiving students the opportunity to connect with the company in hopes of bringing up a new generation of highly skilled software engineers.  The program serves as both a recruitment tool and an opportunity to foster growth in the computer science field.

Program Goals:

  • Provide top freshmen and sophomore students with exciting and interactive courses in Android development to build development competencies in the Android platform, culminating in application development at the end of the program.
  • Allow students to get an inside look into the culture and work of Google.
  • Facilitate connections between students and Googlers that will allow students to discover career paths and create meaningful academic experiences.
Android Camp 2012 runs from July 22-28, 2012. Chosen attendees  will be directly contacted by a member of the Android Camp team confirming their acceptance into the program.  International students must have a current passport or the ability to obtain one before travelling to the Mountain View campus.  All expenses, including travel, are paid by Google.  This includes meals and social events at the Googleplex.  For full application details and answers to frequently asked questions, visit google.com/students/androidcamp.
