Radio Astronomers Receiving Lost Dr. Who Episodes….From Deep Space

Radio astronomers at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico have recently reported that they are receiving television signals that were broadcast from Earth nearly half a century ago.  Note the date.  This is not the first of April.

So is this a Contactesque first contact from an alien civilization?  Not likely, says a Dr. Venn.

“They are signals that left the Earth about 50 years ago and have bounced off an object or more likely a field of objects some 25 light years away.”

Well, so much for a super race of alien invaders…or is it?  Some of the signals that are being received, boosted, and digitally enhanced are old Dr. Who episodes that were thought lost forever.  The BBC has been working with the team at Arecibo, and so far have 7 weeks worth of old space TV archived.  They plan to air it later this year.

Why is Dice re-hashing an old April Fool’s joke as a “Hot Topic”?

– The second link in the article is not the BBC, its a hoax hosted on “www.rimmell.com”
– The date of the hoax page is April 1, 2009.
– Google (Arecibo “Dr. Who”) and the top two results debunk the hoax.

In Dice’s defense, other sites were also fooled
