Scientists at MIT and Harvard have developed a gel that may give greater speaking ability to people with scarred vocal cords. Polyethylene glycol is a flexible, synthetic gel that works in much the same way real vocal cords do. When injected into a person’s vocal cords the polyethylene glycol begins to mimic the real vocal cords by vibrating to create sound. The gel is said to be effective even in severe cases of vocal cord scarring, where a person may completely lose the ability to speak.
