You remember when Google made a bid for a wireless spectrum against all those telephone carriers? It knew it wasn't going to win, but made it clear that it was in the game, and wanted to shake up the carriers’ control of the spectrum. At Interop, Vint Cerf, Google's Chief Internet Evangelist, held an entertaining roundtable discussion where he fielded questions from the assembled journalists. One asked about Cerf’s current feelings on the broadband spectrum. Cerf didn’t surprise, but he definitely clarified Google’s intentions. As Cerf pointed out, we’ve historically dedicated narrow pieces of the spectrum to specific applications. The problem is that the companies that own those barely use it. At any given time, just 2 percent of the allocated spectrum is being utilized.
